DAYTON, Ohio – The Vectren Dayton Air Show Presented by Kroger had what appeared to be a successful first day on Saturday, with large crowds and few glitches in the flying schedule. The air show conludes today, Sunday, July 18, at Dayton International Airport.

DAYTON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, Ohio – Gov. Ted Strickland visited the Vectren Dayton Air Show today to rally support for his request for NASA to put a retired space shuttle in the National Museum of the United States Air Force.

Strickland said Ohio and Ohioans have been an essential part of America's space exploration program, from the invention of the airplane in Dayton to the first footsteps on the moon made by Ohioan Neil Armstrong.
He also pointed out the National Museum, located on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, is the Air Force's only national museum.

The Air Force has asked NASA for a shuttle when it retires the fleet, now scheduled to happen in 2011.

There is no better place to better illustrate the partnership between the United States Air Force and NASA," Strickland said in a press conference in the air show's offices against the roar of jets outside.

Accompanying Strickland were Amanda Wright Lane, great-grandneice of the Wright brothers, former space shuttle astronaut and Ohio resident Mark Brown, and local elected officials and economic development executives from the Dayton region.
