Piqua Airport is better known as Hartzell Field because it
is close to Hartzell Propeller Inc. and is host to
Hartzell's factory service center. Hartzell is part of the
Dayton region's living aviation heritage.
John T. Hartzell founded the company in 1875 as a hardwood lumber business in Greenville. John's son George moved the business to Piqua in 1900 and moved his home to Oakwood. In 1914, Orville Wright moved into Hawthorn Hill and became George's neighbor. The same year, World War I brought an embargo that halted Hartzell's European business. The company looked for domestic products such as gunstocks.
George's son, Robert, had a strong interest in aviation; Orville encouraged him to begin making propellers. He started in 1917, just as the United States entered World War I, creating an instant market for Hartzell Walnut Propellers. Hartzell supplied propellers to the Dayton-Wright Airplane Company, as well as Glen Curtiss' company and other early aviation pioneers.
