Red Stewart Airfield is a family owned and operated
airfield two miles southwest of Waynesville. The
grass-field airport is popular with taildragger and
sailplane pilots. The Stewart family is dedicated to the
preservation of grass roots aviation.
Emerson "Red" Stewart established the field in 1946. The
airport is now owned by Red's eldest son, Emerson Jr.
"Cub," and his wife Cathy. Their daughter Sara manages the
family business, Stewarts Aircraft Service, and their and
son Emerson III is the chief Instructor.
Red
Stewart was a barnstormer whose mastery of a Piper Cub made
him a local legend. Some of his antics included flying the
plane while sitting outside on a wingstrut, and flying
loops that touched his wheels to the ground at the bottom.
Working for Frigidaire in Dayton in the mid-1940s, he would
fly to work and land on the plant's parking lot.
Glider flying is available on the field. It is also close
to Caesar Creek Gliderport, the private flying field of the
Caesar Creek Soaring Club.
Nearby Waynesville is known for its antique shops. The
surrounding area has many natural and recreational
resources, especially along the scenic Little Miami River.
