Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is a major center for Air Force research, development, acquisition, education, intelligence and logistics.
The Air Force Material Command has its headquarters on the base. Its Aeronautical Systems Center develops, acquires and supports new weapon systems.

The Air Force Research Laboratory develops technology for future weapon systems. The Air Force Institute of Technology educates future military leaders. The National Air and Space Intelligence Center analyzes foreign aerospace technology and identifies potential threats.

Wright-Patterson is literally as old as powered flight. It sprang up around Huffman Prairie in Greene County, east of the City of Dayton, where Wilbur and Orville Wright perfected their flying machines in 1904 and 1905.

Many of America's air pioneers earned their wings on Huffman Prairie in the Wright brothers' flying school, including General Henry H. "Hap" Arnold, founder of the Air Force.

The 84-acre Huffman Prairie Flying Field, located off the end of the base runway, is now a National Historic Landmark and part of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park.
