Hudson to direct Air Force's national museum

The Air Force has selected retired Lt. Gen. John L. "Jack" Hudson to be its next director of the National Museum of the United States Air Force, located on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Now the museum's deputy director, Hudson will succeed retiring director Charles Metcalf, a retired Air Force major general.

DAYTON, Ohio – Two descendents of Phil Parmelee, the Wright Company pilot who made the world's first cargo flight in a Wright Model B Flyer in 1910, got a sense today of what cargo flying was like when Parmelee delivered a bolt of silk from Dayton to Columbus in Ohio.

Philip McKeachie and his sister Lecia Lamphere, both of Michigan, received brief orientation flights at a press conference that announced plans to re-enact the cargo flight on Saturday, Oct. 2. "It brought tears to my eyes," McKeachie said.

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio – What's being called the largest gathering of B-25 bombers since World War II went on public display today on the runway behind the National Museum of the United States Air Force.

The static display is in conjunction with the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders' 68th reunion this week at the museum. The bombers flew in this morning after gathering earlier this week at Grimes Field in Urbana.

MIAMI TWP., Ohio – Wright "B" Flyer Inc. volunteers showcased Dayton's aviation heritage in San Antonio, Texas, last week by deploying two of the organization's Wright Model B Flyer lookalikes for the Military Flight Centennial celebration on Fort Sam Houston.

WBF volunteer pilots flew Wright "B" Flyer No. 001 overhead in the March 2 celebration while others taxied the Valentine Wright Model B Flyer on the parade field where Army Lt. Benjamin Foulois made the first military solo flight from a military field 100 years earlier.

MIAMI TWP., Ohio – Greene County officials today praised Wright "B" Flyer Inc. volunteers for continuing to maintain and showcase a replica flyer whose acquisition the county made possible.

Greene County Commissioner Rick Perales presented the non-profit organization with a resolution of appreciation the commission approved last week as the group was preparing to deploy two airplanes and 13 volunteers from its home base on Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport.

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio – A Wright Flyer III replica crashed on Huffman Prairie this morning during a practice flight. The builder and pilot, Mark Dusenberry, was airlifted to Miami Valley Hospital. Federal authorities are investigating the crash.

Brazilian Air Force delivers rare plane to Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio – A Brazilian air force C-130 transport plane stopped at Dayton International Airport today to drop off a rare replica of the Demoiselle – a 1907 airplane designed by Brazilian air pioneer Alberto Santos Dumont. Fernando de Arruda Botelho, a Brazilian industrialist and aviation history enthusiast, is loaning the airplane for display in the Champaign Aviation Museum in Urbana.

DAYTON, Ohio – The Wright brothers never ran for national offices, but they – or, rather, their visages – might end up in the U.S. Capitol anyway.

Ohio lawmakers are looking for a new representative of Ohio to replace an out-of-favor politician in
Statuary Hall of the Capitol. Three members of the National Statuary Collection Study Committee, led by its chairman, State Sen. Mark Wagoner, R-Ottawa Hills, visited the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park Monday, Sept. 21, to learn about the Wright brothers' aviation heritage.

MIAMISBURG, Ohio – Another chapter in the Dayton region's history of space exploration ended today when the European Space Agency switched off its distant Ulysses spacecraft. Orbiting the sun in the cold reaches of space far beyond earth, Ulysses was freezing, but its plutonium-powered generator powered the spacecraft's radio until the end, more than 18 years after its launch. The Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park’s centennial celebration for the inventors of the airplane was much more modest on Saturday, June 20, but it had one thing the first celebration lacked: A Wright Flyer flyover.
