A retired space shuttle in the National Museum of the United States Air Force would become a tool for STEM learning programs in Ohio and perhaps beyond, a state education official said last week in a letter to the space agency.

The letter by Ohio Superintendent of Public Instruction Deborah Delisle to NASA Administrator Charles Bolden follows one from the Ohio Division of Tourism promoting the National Museum as an ideal place to make a retired shuttle orbiter accessible to citizens.

Space Shuttle Atlantis ended its last scheduled mission flawlessly today, touching down on Kennedy Space Center after 12 days in space.

Meanwhile, the Ohio Senate has added its voice in urging NASA to put a shuttle in the National Museum of the United States Air Force near Dayton.

DAYTON, Ohio – Eighteen former astronauts are asking NASA to choose the National Museum of the United States Air Force near Dayton as a place to display one of its space shuttles after the fleet is retired – preferably Atlantis, now docked at the International Space Station on its last scheduled mission.
