The
Wright Company factory was the first facility in the USA
built specifically for the purpose of making airplanes. On
March 30, 2009, President Obama signed into law a bill
adding the Wright factory buildings and Hawthorn Hill to
the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park.
The site consists of two buildings that are a part of a
much larger former Delphi Corporation automotive
manufacturing plant. The Wright Company produced most of
the Wright airplanes. Orville sold the company in 1915. The
factory eventually became part of a General Motors plant
and then Delphi.
Delphi still owns the factory buildings, and no plans have been made to transfer ownership of the property or make the buildings accessible to the public.
The National Aviation Heritage Area has proposed turning the buildings into a Williamsburg-style living history exhibit, where re-enactors would build Wright airplane replicas. Sinclair Community College has expressed an interest in housing aviation technology classes in the buildings.
